Is Intermittent Fasting a Metabolic Reset?

We’ve all heard about intermittent fasting (IF) by now — but is it really a reset for your metabolism, or just another diet trend?

Let’s break it down.

What Is Intermittent Fasting, Really?

Intermittent fasting isn’t about starving yourself. It’s about giving your body a break from constantly digesting and processing food. When done with intention, fasting can allow your body to shift into repair mode instead of always being in energy-storage mode.

Here’s what happens during a fast:

  • Insulin levels drop, allowing your body to access stored fat for fuel

  • Cellular repair kicks in, including autophagy (your body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells)

  • Inflammation may decrease

  • Hormone balance may improve, especially for women post-menopause

So yes — when done properly, IF can absolutely act as a metabolic reset.

But It’s Not for Everyone — Especially Women

Women’s bodies are incredibly sensitive to perceived stress, and skipping meals can be read as a stressor by the body — especially if you’re already dealing with hormone shifts, adrenal fatigue, or emotional burnout.

That’s why timing, nourishment, and lifestyle context matter.

If you’re constantly running on cortisol, fasting may not feel good — and that’s a sign to listen to your body.

How to Try a Gentle Fast

You don’t need to jump into 16:8 or full-day fasts to feel the benefits. A simple 12-hour overnight fast is a beautiful place to start (for example, 7pm to 7am). It gives your digestive system a break and allows your body to recalibrate, without pushing you into overwhelm.

New Tool Alert: Cacao to the Rescue

If you’ve ever tried intermittent fasting and found yourself desperately craving something warm and comforting in the morning, I hear you.

That’s why I’m loving the new Juice Plus Cacao blend.

It’s:

  • Rich in magnesium for nervous system support

  • Packed with flavonoids that support mood and metabolism

  • Low glycemic, meaning it won’t spike your blood sugar

  • Warm, satisfying, and seriously delicious

And the best part? It can help you stay in your fast a little longer — giving you that cozy, nurturing moment without breaking the metabolic benefits of your fast.

The Bottom Line

Intermittent fasting can be a beautiful tool for metabolic and hormonal balance — but it’s not one-size-fits-all. Start slow, listen to your body, and focus on what feels sustainable.

Pair it with nourishing rituals (like cacao), stress regulation, and plenty of sleep — and it becomes a gentle, supportive reset for your entire system.
